Indian tribes, including those of the Pomo and Miwok, occupied the fertile, game-laden Sonoma Valley, with its trout-filled streams, for centuries before the Spanish Franciscan Padre Jose Altimira arrived to establish Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma here on July 4, 1823.

Today, visitors continue to be attracted to Sonoma Valley's beauty, rural atmosphere and casual wine country lifestyle. Home to some of the world's finest wine makers, Sonoma Valley's climate is not only perfect for growing grapes, but makes it home to many of California's finest hotels and bed and breakfast inns.
